The Patina BulletinDecember 2005

Season’s Greetings!

It’s been an extraordinary year for all of us at Patina. We introduced our new Pompeii collection, added new sales reps around the country and opened a new showroom in Dubai.

We also changed the way we do business here in Atlanta by purchasing and renovating our own building, which will consolidate our offices and warehouse in one large new location.

As we look back on the year and forward to the next, we hope that all our friends, colleagues and customers have a very happy and safe Holiday Season.

Best wishes and Felice Anno Nuovo!*

Designer Profile

Lori Tippins

Landing the perfect client, one who knows what they want and isn’t afraid to go for it is the dream of all interior designers, but landing that client as your first was a dream come true for designer Lori Tippins.

Having spent two and a half years working in a prestigious Atlanta design firm, Lori decided it was time for her to get out on her own and start her own company. Two weeks later, she had her first client and project.

“I was going to take a month off and spend some quality time with my daughter and this happened. It’s a good problem to have,” says Lori, “My client is wonderful. She knows what she likes. She knows what she hates and other than that, she’s very open.”

In fact, Lori’s client was the one who steered her toward Patina.

“When she called she said, ‘I’m ready to do some things to my dinning room, my living room and my master bedroom.’ She had a picture of a Patina bed that she had clipped from a design magazine and she asked me to find out more about the line.”

Lori was quickly able to determine that Patina was now being represented in Atlanta by Grizzel & Mann, a company that she was very familiar with, and with the help of Sandra Swann and Laurie Albers of G&M she found the perfect bed for her client ready and waiting in the showroom.

She chose a Friuli Bed with a Venetian Tea House decorative option that had Ferns & Insects in raised gesso. Her client loved the bed.

“One thing that’s wonderful about this line in particular is, that when you see it, it’s so much better than you can imagine. I like my clients to touch and see and feel everything they are buying and when I brought my client in to see it she said, ‘I like it even more than I thought I would. This is it.’ So now we’re using the bed as the focal point for the room.”

Lori’s client is extremely happy with her Patina bed and Lori is now choosing fabrics to compliment it. The project will take another two months to complete but the Friuli bed has already become a treasured piece in her client’s home.

Part 3:

Venice—Home as a Metaphor

The impulse to show off the cherished values of nobility seen in the public environs of their homes continued in the more private spaces of the family palace.

Off the main corridor of the home were the family bedchambers, one for the man of the house, another for his wife. If the couple had children, they often shared a large mezzanine room linked directly, via a hidden staircase, to their mother’s bedroom.

Often there would be a third bedroom for an elderly mother or father living with the couple. There would also be bedchambers for at least one servant and sometimes two or three on the floor below.

These bedchambers were lavishly adorned with gold leaf ceilings and walls but had an uncluttered look. All clothing and possessions were carefully stored away in painted armoires, desks and chests.

The beds themselves were usually of two styles. The first would be handsomely carved and built in to the room itself needing only to have mattresses and bedclothes supplied.

The most popular style, however, was the da pavion (pavilion or tent) style now known as the canopied bed. These beds were often made of gilded iron and painted wood and are, of course, the inspiration for the original line of Patina beds such as the Cellini bed frame.
