The Patina Bulletin August 2006

The New Product Issue

This month we thought we'd celebrate some of the great new products Patina Furniture has introduced over the last year. We lead off with the Plasma Secretary then we'll take a look at The Pompeii Collection and finish up with a little something for our four legged friends.

The Plasma Secretary

When it comes to our living spaces, many of us have a love hate relationship with the television set. We love to watch movies and other programming but we don’t want a large blank screen dominating and overpowering the look of an otherwise beautiful room.

Patina recognized this early on and has for years offered an armoire specifically designed to hold and disguise very large television sets and it continues to be a very successful piece in the product line.

Times and technology have changed—with new, thinner but larger plasma screens becoming the norm. In keeping with this trend, Patina is now offering an even better solution for disguising these wide screen sets, the Plasma Secretary.

Based on the Palazzo secretary frame and available in all of the Patina hand painted designs, as well as custom colors, the secretary is designed to hold up to a 35-inch wide plasma screen.

“The real beauty of this piece is that it’s not your typical TV cabinet,” says Patina president Marylu Stevens, “It not only looks like a secretary but still retains the functional writing desk and storage space of our traditional model.”

“I think this piece could be particularly nice in a room where space is very limited, in a small den, for example, or in a guest room; anywhere that dual-functionality is required.”

And while not tipping our hand too early, this may not be the last new redesign in the Patina line this year.

“This is the first in a series of efforts to look at our furniture in new ways; to see how we can use them in more contemporary ways. We think it’s an interesting juxtaposition, essentially hiding modern technology in furniture styled after 18th century designs.”

New Product Highlight

The Pompeii Collection

One of the most striking things about the Pompeii Collection is the decoration, a departure from the traditional floral designs of other Patina lines. The Pompeii decorations are more simple, classical.

“With the Pompeii collection we're introducing the "Premium Finish". It’s more like buildings that have aged with the texture and the plaster underneath and the gesso and the color. That was my inspiration for this,” says Patina designer, Ann Graham.

“I had all these pictures I had taken in Italy of old walls and doors and they all had these great textures to them. I took those to the lacquerer and had him do samples of those and I thought they were all so fabulous. The black is really beautiful!"

Besides black, the Pompeii Collection includes a wonderful dark brown and a rusty red or brick, all with textured surfaces underneath, as well as, exquisite painted and carved architectural details.

“I was hesitant to change the finishes. I don’t like to depart from our finishes because I like them a lot and we’ve worked very hard to get them to where they are and keep them that way, to keep them consistent. But I just thought it was time to try something new, we were established enough to be able to do that and I think they’ve been very successful.”

Another new emphasis in the Pompeii Collection is the greater use of upholstery. “We had not done a lot of upholstered pieces in our collections. I thought it was time to have something very comfortable.”

The Cicero chair became the starting point for several of the new upholstered pieces. “It started with a picture of a French settee that I’d had for awhile. I always loved that curved arm coming down and being continuous to the leg. I thought that’s the kind of thing you can make into a sofa, a settee, a chair, and so that’s what we did.”

The results speak for themselves. Classic design, texture, rich color and comfort are the hallmarks of the new Pompeii Collection from Patina, Inc.

Editor's Note: Since we first published this article the "Premium" finish that Ann discussed is now available on any piece from any collection, not just the Pompeii collection.

Patina Going to the Dogs

Beds have been the Patina “signature” piece and CEO Marylu Stevens believes it’s only natural to add dog beds to the line; besides she says, “they’re absolutely adorable!”

“I was inspired by my two dogs, Marcus (a Yellow Lab) and Remy (the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel pictured). They both have the typical dog cushion beds and although I’ve tried to disguise them with designer fabrics, they still didn’t quite fit my “Patina” bedroom."

“My Patina bed is beautiful and it makes me feel special every time I get into it, so…don’t our “best friends” deserve to feel special, too?”

The Patina Dog Bed is a miniature version of the Patina “people” beds. Currently, offered in the B19 and B59 frame styles, painted and finished by the same artists that finish all of our furniture. The beds are available in 3 different sizes: small, medium, and large.

The Patina Dog Bed is available now; contact your local Patina rep for more information and pricing.
